
Aims
The aim of this course is to provide seafarers with knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and its application to shipboard operations. The course prepares participants to implement environmental policies, comply with MARPOL requirements, manage shipboard waste responsibly, and support sustainable shipping practices through monitoring and continuous improvement.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the role of environmental management in safe and sustainable shipping operations.
- Describe the principles, structure, and requirements of ISO 14001 and its Environmental Management System (EMS) framework.
- Interpret and implement shipboard environmental policies and objectives.
- Identify MARPOL Annexes I–VI and their relevance to pollution prevention.
- Apply effective shipboard waste management and garbage control measures.
- Demonstrate preparedness for environmental emergencies, including spill response.
- Participate in environmental monitoring, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives onboard.
