AIMS

The Risk Assessment and Risk Management (RARM) course is designed to provide seafarers, supervisors, and shore-based personnel with the knowledge and practical skills required to identify workplace hazards, assess associated risks, and implement effective control measures. The course promotes a proactive safety culture and ensures compliance with applicable international maritime regulations, including the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers, and relevant occupational health and safety requirements. Participants will learn how to conduct systematic risk assessments to prevent accidents, injuries, environmental incidents, and property damage during shipboard operations.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the importance and purpose of risk assessment in maritime operations. 
  • Explain the legal and regulatory requirements relating to risk assessment. 
  • Define hazards, risks, and control measures. 
  • Identify workplace hazards associated with shipboard activities. 
  • Understand the responsibilities of competent persons involved in risk assessment. 
  • Apply the five-step risk assessment process effectively. 
  • Select appropriate risk control measures using the hierarchy of controls. 
  • Complete and maintain risk assessment records and documentation. 
  • Review and update risk assessments following changes in operations or incidents. 
  • Promote continuous improvement in occupational safety and health.
