Aims:
This course aims to provide all seafarers — especially those assigned as free-fall lifeboat operating crew — with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to safely launch, recover, and maintain a free-fall lifeboat in compliance with STCW 1995 Section A-VI/2-1, the IMO Model Course 1.23, STCW.6/Circ.10, and SOLAS Chapter III requirements. It also meets the regulatory requirement for regular training and drills to ensure readiness for real emergency abandon-ship situations.
Course Objectives:
By the
end of this familiarization course, participants will be able to:
✅ Identify the design, construction, and specifications of free-fall
lifeboats, including fire protection and air support systems.
✅ Describe the principles, performance requirements, and safety features
that enable a free-fall lifeboat to withstand impact and protect occupants.
✅ Demonstrate the correct ship-specific procedures for boarding,
launching, and recovering a free-fall lifeboat, including the four launch
stages and simulated drills.
✅ Apply the relevant international regulations and company procedures for
maintenance, inspection, and periodic testing.
✅ Perform risk assessments, hazard identification, and follow all safety
protocols to reduce risks during drills and real launches.
✅ Develop the confidence to overcome mental barriers associated with
free-fall launching and understand the importance of a well-maintained,
