AIMS:
This course equips students with the knowledge and skills to safely operate and launch free-fall lifeboats. It covers design features, pre-launch checks, emergency procedures, and safe crew positioning. Participants gain confidence in drills, hazard awareness, and post-launch recovery procedures.
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this familiarization course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the design, construction, and specifications of free-fall lifeboats, including fire protection and air support systems.
- Describe the principles, performance requirements, and safety features that enable a free-fall lifeboat to withstand impact and protect occupants.
- Demonstrate the correct ship-specific procedures for boarding, launching, and recovering a free-fall lifeboat, including the four launch stages and simulated drills.
- Apply the relevant international regulations and company procedures for maintenance, inspection, and periodic testing.
- Perform risk assessments, hazard identification, and follow all safety protocols to reduce risks during drills and real launches.
- Develop the confidence to overcome mental barriers associated with free-fall launching and understand the importance of a well-maintained, ready-to-launch survival craft.
