Course Overview

Aim:

To provide marine engineers, technical officers, and shipboard personnel with in-depth knowledge and practical skills related to the operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of marine exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), in accordance with IMO MARPOL Annex VI requirements and global/ECAs sulphur limits.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (Scrubbers) – Training Outcomes

  1. Understand International Regulations
    • Interpret IMO MARPOL Annex VI requirements concerning SOx emissions.
    • Differentiate between Emission Control Areas (ECAs) and global sulphur cap limits.
  2. Explain Scrubber Systems
    • Describe the principles of operation for open-loop, closed-loop, and hybrid scrubber systems.
    • Identify key components such as scrubber towers, washwater treatment units, pumps, sensors, and control panels.
  3. Operate Multi-Stream Configurations
    • Understand the design and control of multi-stream scrubber systems handling multiple engine/boiler exhausts.
    • Analyze OEM designs from Wärtsilä, Alfa Laval, and Feen Marine.
  4. Apply Safe Operational Practices
    • Conduct safe start-up, shutdown, and emergency bypass procedures.
    • Monitor emissions and manage washwater handling, including MARPOL-compliant record-keeping.
  5. Perform Maintenance Tasks
    • Execute cleaning, calibration, and inspection tasks for scrubbers.
    • Manage sludge and waste products responsibly.
  6. Mitigate Hazards
    • Identify and manage risks such as acid formation, toxic gas releases, cavitation, and backpressure.
    • Implement safety procedures during port state inspections and equipment failures.
  7. Integrate Systems with Engine Controls
    • Understand automation and monitoring integration between emission control systems and the ship's engine management systems.
  8. Assess Manufacturer-Specific Systems
    • Compare and evaluate commercial scrubber systems from leading OEMs such as MAN, Wärtsilä, and ABB.
