Aims:
The course aims to equip seafarers with the advanced knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively operate ships in polar waters. Participants will learn to navigate the unique challenges posed by extreme weather conditions, remote locations, inadequate mapping, and poor communication systems. The course emphasizes the importance of human factors, proper vessel construction, and adherence to safety protocols to ensure safe operations in these hazardous environments.
"Advanced Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters", in accordance with Regulation V/4, Section A-V/4-2, Paragraph 2 and Table A-V/4-2 of the STCW´78 Convention, as amended and its STCW Code and IMO Model Course 7.12
Objectives:
1. Understand and apply the basic safety principles for operating vessels in polar waters.
2. Identify and mitigate the specific risks associated with navigating in polar regions.
3. Utilize appropriate equipment, charts, and nautical publications for safe navigation.
4. Plan and execute safe voyages through polar waters, considering regulatory regimes and the need for icebreaker assistance.
5. Assess and manage the vessel's maneuvering capabilities in ice conditions.
6. Perform safe docking, anchoring, loading, and drilling operations in polar waters.
7. Apply environmental protection measures to prevent contamination of the marine environment.
8. Demonstrate effective communication and coordination during polar operations.
9. Respond appropriately to emergencies in polar waters.
