
Aims
The aim of this course is to equip seafarers with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to effectively work in a multicultural shipboard environment. The course prepares participants to handle cultural differences, improve communication, resolve conflicts, foster inclusion, and ensure safe and productive teamwork across diverse crews.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the concept of multiculturalism at sea and its significance for shipboard operations.
- Recognize cultural differences and their impact on crew behaviour and workplace dynamics.
- Apply cross-cultural communication skills to reduce misunderstandings and enhance clarity.
- Use conflict management and resolution strategies appropriate to a diverse environment.
- Adapt leadership styles to effectively manage and motivate multicultural crews.
- Build trust, cooperation, and teamwork among crew members from varied cultural backgrounds.
- Interpret the provisions of MLC 2006 related to non-discrimination, fair treatment, and human rights of seafarers.
