AIMS:

This course is designed to strengthen the practical knowledge and troubleshooting skills of engine-room personnel in electrical, electronic, automation, control, hydraulic and engine-management systems. It focuses on understanding system operation, identifying faults, systematic fault finding, safe maintenance practices and effective troubleshooting of Main Engine, Auxiliary Engine and tanker-specific machinery.

OBJECTIVES:

On completion, trainees will be able to:

  • Define the basic electrical quantities and their units.
  • Apply Ohm's law and the power equations to series and parallel circuits.
  • Explain AC fundamentals, including frequency, RMS values, reactance, impedance and power factor.
  • Describe three-phase star and delta connections and the insulated neutral system used on ships.
  • Identify common passive and semiconductor components and state their function.
  • Select and use a multimeter, clamp meter and insulation resistance tester safely.
